Directed Research in Astronautical Engineering

Effective Fall 2013, all ASTE students will be required to follow the steps outlined below if interested in taking Directed Research ASTE 490 (undergraduate students), ASTE 590 (master's students) or ASTE 790 (Ph.D. students).

  1. Students obtain verbal approval from faculty to sign up for a directed research course.
  2. Students log in to http://myviterbi.usc.edu, click Directed Research (under Student Resources), and complete the online form.
  3. Faculty are automatically sent an email directing them to the admin site where they can log in and approve or deny students' requests.
  4. Students receive a confirmation email that their research project has been approved or denied by the faculty member.
  5. Students receive d-clearance within 1-3 business days for the course.
  6. Students register for the course via Web Registration.

Directed Research is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue research beyond the normal course offerings under the direction of a professor of their choice. This course is open to students with an overall GPA of 3.0. No more than three units of ASTE 490 or ASTE 590 can be applied towards the technical elective requirement.

Students and their faculty advisors must establish a plan of work and a timetable for completing the research: the number of projected meetings throughout the semester, deadlines for assignments and/or final report/demo/other, use of USC research facilities and work to be done off campus if applicable.
